Alpharetta IRONKIDS
Last Saturday and Sunday under perfect weather conditions the Alpharetta Rotary Club provided volunteers and refreshment concessions for the Alpharetta IRONKIDS competition. More than 1500 entrants ages 16 and under from all over the country descended on Alpharetta's Wills Park for this event that comprises swimming, bike riding, and running. Mary Ulich provided leadership for this fundraising/service opportunity. Two concession stands were manned both days as well as volunteers helping with registration, sales, and course monitoring. Many thanks to all our participating club members.
One tense moment occurred when the charcoal ran low and customers were clamoring for our hotdogs. Without Steve Gillard present to offer his expertise, improvisation was in order. "Boy Scout" ingenuity prevailed as various "substitute" forest byproducts were readily available and utilized to keep the fire going until additional charcoal arrived. The unique flavor imparted by the large cloud of smoke and ash made the hotdogs an unqualified success. Very few were left on the grill.
